Sochi 2014: Iouri Podladtchikov's Winning Halfpipe Run Break Down

TELL ME THIS DIDN'T DESERVE THE GOLD?

Iouri Podladtchikov winning halfpipe run breakdown

We just found this on the inter-webs (on our friends’ the Family Creative’s Facebook Page, thought we’re not sure if they made it?): a sick sequence of Iouri Podladtchikov’s winning halfpipe run broken down with each trick labelled.

There was a lot of chat last night about whether the pint-sized Japanese prodigy Ayumu Hirano was robbed, but having watched back the footage Whitelines reckons the judging was pretty spot on. I mean c’mon, look at this.

After a big stylish method and a crippler 540, he launches into the killer combo. Double cork 12 (the Tomahawk) into front double 10, into cab double 1440 (the Yolo). I mean what the ACTUAL fuck?! Two of those tricks are ones that only two people (Shaun and I-Pod) can do. Ayumu may have got an extra hit (and gone slightly bigger) but he had nothing to match a combo like that for tech.

Shaun White meanwhile tried a similar combination, but couldn’t stomp them cleanly. Something we reckon might have had more to do with his state of mind than the state of the pipe…

On a side-note, we’d love to see this super-imposed over a similar graphic showing fellow Swiss rider Gian Simmen’s winning halfpipe run from 1998, which looked like this:

Tells you something about the speed of progression eh? Incidentally Gian was out in Sochi commentating for Swiss TV, and was apparently stoked for iPod.

Oh and if that image at the top gave you a hard on, here’s a similar one of his WST World Snowboard Championship winning run from 2012.

I-Pod’s run from the WST World Snowboard Champs in 2012. Not as tech, but still rad!

UPDATE: Apparently the image at the top comes from the New York Times, who have put together this awesome post about iPod’s run. Check it out here.
