Nikita Send Crazy Pics of Iceland Volcano

We’re all glued to the news about the strangely named volcano in Iceland which has grounded flights across Europe and left hundreds of thousands of people stranded. For me at least, it’s a reminder of how powerful nature is – and how fragile the civilisation we take for granted. From a snowboarder’s persepective, if the ash cloud had arrived mid-season it would have destroyed people’s trips and potentially ruined chalets and holiday operators. Thankfully most of us have had our snow fix already. But with fruit and fish rotting at airports awaiting shipping and Europe’s economy again under threat, the implications are far wider than that. Essentially, one mountain on a distant island can change our whole lives. That’s a humbling thought.

Most of the media are focussing their cameras on the empty airports and miserable travellers; not much has been heard from an Icelandic perspective. We were therefore pretty interested to get an email from Geiri Höskudsson, who runs Iceland’s famous female brand Nikita and who acted as our guide on a Whitelines tour of the country exactly two years ago. Geiri attached a crazy photo from the heart of the eruption and sent a bunch of cool links for anyone interested in seeing live video etc. Here’s what he had to say:
