Issue 95 – February 2011

Any day now subscribers will be hearing the satisfying ‘whump’ of a new, fresh issue of Whitelines landing on their front doormat, and jumping for joy like so many lunatic jack-in-a-boxes. Meanwhile, newsagents will no doubt be battling back the huge crowds as people fight each other for their chance to get their hands on issue 95… well, that’s how it goes in our heads anyway ;-) Anyway, even if the reality isn’t, Whitelines 95 is here – and that’s surely enough reason for a little celebration? Here’s what we’ve got in store for you this month:

ON THE COVER: FREE 2011 CALENDAR
We’ve gathered some of the sickest snowboarding shots from around the world together in a handy monthly-planner format. There’s a bangin’ new shot of Travis, Seb Toots, Torah or another top rider to oggle every month, so you can keep your stoke high as you cross off the days til your next shred! Or use it to mark down your Gran’s birthday or whatever. Guaranteed to keep you amped!

HOME FRONT: UK RAIL ASSAULT
What with all the snow that fell earlier this year, the shredders of Britain have been taking to the UK Streets… and they’ve been killing it! Seriously, Salt Lake City eat your heart out!! From Leeds rails to Aberdeen freight containers, this article shows you exactly what’s possible when Brits get bit of snow, some willing mates, and a big pair of balls.

THE BIG BANG: MIKKEL COMES OF AGE
Mikkel Bang has been big news ever since he first exploded onto our screens as a prodigiously talented 13-year-old in Standard Films’ White Balance. Since then, his star has only grown, and he’s now one of Burton’s brightest talents. We thought it was high time we tracked him down to talk comps, child stardom, and erm… foxes.

STEPPING UP: TYLER CHORLTON RIDES AK
Few riders of any nationality get the chance to ride the epic terrain and incredible snow of Alaska properly, and the number of Brits who’ve made it over there is small. So when Tyler Chorlton told us he’d been hitting the 49th state hard, we had to hear the full story. Here, accompanied by amazing action photos, is the full story of the trip in his own words.

DIALLED IN: HOW THE ‘NET CHANGED SNOWBOARDING
It’s hard to think now, but only a few year’s back, no-one had heard of Facebook, Twitter, or even Youtube. Photos still took time to develop, and video cameras needed to be big enough to fit tapes inside. In recent years, the digital revolution has had a huge effect on how we go about our lives, not least in snowboarding. But has something been lost along the way? Chris Moran digs deep into the mists of the pre-interweb age to pose the question, while Whitelines’ senior photographer Matt Georges accompanies his ramblings with a gallery of sick shots taken on an old-school polaroid.
