Whistler Exposed Calendar 2014

A CHEEKY CHARITY CALENDAR SHOWING OFF THE CANADIAN SHRED MECCA

A few days back, we got a Facebook message from one Shannen Carlson, the photographer behind these shots, asking: “Can you guys help promote the Whistler Exposed Calendar?

Well let’s see shall we…

At first glance, the website appears to be offering a guide to on-hill etiquette. Here Miss March 2014, is demonstrating the correct technique for side-hilling on a sled.

While Miss April is showing you the kit you need for splitboarding. Whistler after all is pretty extreme. If you’re not sledding then you should probably be properly tooled up for the backcountry.

Like Miss May here, who’s getting ready to board a helicopter. As her attire would suggest, she’s fully prepped to tackle the famous waist-deep pow.

Flicking through the site further however, we realised that the calendar is not limited to winter. In fact it’s all about “exposing” the full range of activities you can do in Whistler.

Over the summer this apparently includes golf…

…archery…

…and erm standing in the snow with a guitar.

And there we were thinking the resort was all about the snowboarding!

The calendar isn’t part of Whistler’s official promotion, but over the years the public-spirited individuals behind it have shown impressive dedication to showing off the best of what the resort has to offer.

As these keen sportswomen show there’s also rock-climbing…

…snow-shoeing in stockings…

and… actually, we’re not sure what she’s doing here. Suggestions on a postcard please.

Anyway, as this behind the scenes video shows, Shannen and her team spend a lot of time and effort putting this together. The final shots are selected by an (interestingly) all-female editorial team (skip to 6.24) in a process that actually looks remarkably similar to how we chose photos for our magazine – although we generally have less booze and more Madonna stickers.

It’s worth remembering though that the whole thing is in a good cause – all proceeds from the sale of the calendar go to spinal cord research, and it all looks like good clean fun.

Of course there will be people who claim to find this sort of thing “offensive”…

…but hey we can’t help it that they decided to include skiing in there! I guess the sorry truth is that skiing sells eh?

Anyway, it’s worth remembering that if anyone cries “objectification” or “sexist” they’re probably just a heartless bastard who don’t care about spinal cord research. ;-)

You can buy the 2014 Whistler Exposed Calendar from whistlerexposed.com now.

We’re also currently giving away the “trip of a lifetime” to Whistler, including flights, accommodation and liftpasses. Find out how to win it here.
