In case you needed another reason not to watch NBC’s Olympic coverage, they just released this really, really awful Sochi 2014 promo video. It’s Team USA singing an ear drum-perforating rendition of the ‘Twelve Days of Christmas’. If this abomination is a desperate attempt to get an ad to “go viral” it’s failing. Here’s why:
1) Who the hell is Bob Costas?
And why do they keep repeating his name?! This mind-numbingly dull song is the worst Christmas carol already. There’s no need to make it worse by making it MORE repetitive.
2) WHy make them sing?
If you have to roll with this theme, wouldn’t miming have done the trick? They’re athletes, not performing monkeys. We’ve spotted a few familiar faces including Scotty ‘Baritone’ Lago, Hannah Teter, Gretchen Bleiler, Kelly Clark and Elena Hight. But if you’ve got all that talent why not get them, you know actually riding, instead of prancing around with inflatable guitars and wailing really badly out of tune?
3) IT doesn’t make any sense
“12 Days of Sochi”? There are 17! What are “ten busy brakemen”? Or “nine sliders sliding”? I mean, what? Even less thought has gone into these lyrics than your average One Direction song.
4) nbc has previous
It’s not like the American network has a stellar reputation when it comes to Olympic coverage. Back in 2010 in Vancouver American audiences couldn’t get watch the snowboarding events live on TV – instead having to wait for an edited highlights package that cut a lot of the “foreign” riders runs. Luckily it was just about saved by Todd Richards classy commentary. But then of course there was their controversial commentary on the London opening ceremony last year… For Sochi 2014, they’ve apparently signed up Maria Sharapova as a general commentator! Yes she’s Russian but it’s still a bit random, no?
5) so we’ll be tuning out…
All the more reason to stick with Ed Leigh and Tim Warwood’s commentary on the BBC this February. At least they won’t be singing.
